Where were You today?
Climbed up on a hill
to see if I could find You
Listened in the wind
But all I heard was sadness
Did I do something wrong
Why can’t I hear You anymore?
Where have You gone?
You said You’d be here if I came
Where were You today?
The earth began to shake
But all I felt was trembling
The flames came and went
But all I saw was burning
Did I do something wrong
Why can’t I hear You anymore?
Where have You gone?
You said You’d be here if I came
Where were You today?
Then I took a second to stop and just breathe
I listened close just in time to hear You
Whisper to me…..
Did I do something wrong?
Why aren’t you listening anymore?
Where have you gone
I said I’d meet you if you came
Where were you today?
My son Daniel wrote this song. He scoffs at it because it was “just a class assignment”. The assignment was to write a spiritual song. I think this song is all about relationship……which is the essence of spiritual life.
Have you ever been there? I think we all have. Those times and places in our lives when we just can’t seem to “hear” God anymore. For Moses God’s voice came in the trembling of the mountain or the burning of a bush. What happens when you go back to the places you once “heard” God and you can’t find Him? It’s in those times that we have to “just breathe”. God is always there……whispering to us….Where were you today?

This week I was in the local Walgreen’s getting some prescriptions filled. His man caught my attention as he was impatiently pacing back and forth waiting in line to talk to the pharmacist (who was very patiently helping a senior citizen). He plopped down in the chair next to me and asked me….”is there a pharmacy anywhere near here.” My face must have given away that I was confused by the question because we were already SITTING IN a pharmacy. He stood up and said in a very loud voice….”I got f’n cancer and I am waiting in line behind an f’n old lady buying an f’n mop…..I aint got f’n time for this” and stormed away. As I sat there gathering myself (and hoping that the sweet little lady in line was hearing impaired), a picture came to my mind. One day in Children’s Church we filled a glass all the way to the top with water and put it on a table, then began banging on the table. Of course the water spilled out. The glass is me and my life, the water is what is inside me, and the banging is the trials and pressure the world brings to all our lives from time to time. I hope what’s splashing out of me is not what was “splashing out” of that man of my chance encounter.
“Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him.” John 7:38

Testing. This is only a test.
Had this been a real emergency, you would know.
